Young Journalists’ blog (FCP 2008)
Here is Gabi, from Hungary…
I can’t believe this! 🙂 I’m…sorry…we are in Finland now! All the 18 people – after smaller and bigger adventures – came safely to port with the help of Katri, Sara and Hanna and everybody else. We thought that after these hard moments we will have a sunny, funny, joyful opening day with the ceremony etc. (Photo from our boat to Suomenlinna).
We had fun and joy. There wasn’t a problem with that. From the first minute of our departure (from the CIMO residence) black clouds were gathering above us. Metaphorically because we were late (the bus passed) and literally beacuse a big storm was coming out. And it seemed that the weather really wanted to show us what the real Finnish type weather is – we got soaked 2 or 3 times until we arrived at the Foreign Ministry’s building.
Naturally, nobody had an umbrella or a raincoat, excepting Joyce who was thinking and realizing that „Hey guys, we are in Finland, the weather may change from one minute to other”. Yeah, definetly she’s the smartest one! I can imagine our looking, we just seem like having a shower without taking off the clothes.;) I swear that we weren’t in a car-washer before the ceremony.;) But! I had a strange feeling that the clouds were following us directly from Koskela to downtown and afterwards to Suomenlinna. Maybe I’m paranoid, but this was the truth.
But the wonderful programmes of the opening ceremony – the finnish melodies (presented by two very symphatethic girls Ms. Saara Lindahl and Ms. Aliisa Hyvönen) and nice speeches (Mr. Renne Klinge and Katri) warmed us up quickly. In the ending part of the ceremony we had a chance to do some time travelling. A real one! I’m not lying. We really did! Ca. 13000 years under 1 and ½ hour.;) Mr. Jyrki Hakapää was on the wheels. (Photo: the opening ceremony, left Renne and right Katri).
After this big travel we became quite hungry and thirsty.;) So after the history lecture we landed safely in the present, we headed to the harbour (the sun was shining) to take our boat to Suomenlinna Fortress. At the very moment as we tried to forget about the earlier rain , THOSE black clouds were coming again and they brought help too…Zeus, personally! He was soooo unfriendly, he was throwing thunders on us (I took it as personal abuse from him) and tried to stop us with a very strong wind. But we are a brave and strong team! We are the „heroes” of FCP2008!
As we stepped onto the ground of Suomenlinna, it started to rain like cats and dogs. STILL NO umbrellas or raincoats.;) And we had 1,5km to walk.;) That’s why I gave this kind of title my blogpost.;) Hills, valleys, mud, wind, rain, without correct equipment, sooo we really had to work for our dinner.;) This is the Finnish Amazing Race for FCP2008:) The best will win a dinner at Walhalla Restaurant! (Photo: dinner feelings in Walhalla).
Time travelling + revenge of the Greek gods with this stormy wheater (I’m still searching the reasons – what we did in a wrong way?) + the Amazing Race, really tired us out. But I have to notice here happily that everybody completed the 1st mission (reaching the destination and surviving the stormy weahter) and received the meal.
We talked a lot (first experiences + a covered mission too, a memory game – learning each others names), the time was just passing by, and soon we catched ourselves on that we are on the route back to Helsinki harbour.;) Just cite my favourite band’s lines (U2) : „It’s a beautiful day.” OFF
