It’s been a little bit more than two months since I was informed that I’ve been selected to participate in this year’s Foreign Correspondents’ Programme. It seems like a long time ago but I still can’t completely believe this is happening and that in less than a month I will be traveling to an amazing country I’ve never been before.
I’m really excited about this trip because I’ve always wanted to travel the world and see new places and countries. And to be able to do it as a journalist, gives it a special touch. I will not be just a tourist in a new country, but I will have the chance to experience it, to live and meet its stories and its culture beyond the maybe typical things or places people who are only touring get to see. That’s just something I really think is great.
About me, I’m a 24-year-old journalist currently living in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, but I’m originally from Medellín, the second most important city in the country. Having lived in both cities, which have very different climates (Bogotá is quite cold while Medellín is more warm and it’s known as ‘the city of eternal spring’) made me think if the climate in Finland will feel more like I’m in one city or the other. We’ll see.
What else can I say about me? I love languages! They get me almost as excited as food (I love eating). I also enjoy cooking, especially sweet stuff like cakes and desserts. I enjoy taking long walks and being out in the nature. I also like crafts and I’ve done origami figures as a hobby for many years now.
Regarding my activities as a journalist, I enjoy covering stories about environment, transportation and culture among others. I’m currently working in judiciary journalism at El Tiempo newspaper in Colombia.
Apart from being excited about the trip, I’m also a little nervous. But just a bit. I’ve never been so far away from home before but then again, this makes me so excited because it also means I’ll get to experience and learn things I haven’t done before.
I also hope to meet new interesting and cool people and make new friends from all around the world. For me this trip is not only about getting to know Finland, but to experience the country with other people who also happen to be journalists. I think they might be as curious as me about what this country is going to surprise us with.
Hopefully I will not only become a lifelong friend with Finland but I will make some new friends around the world. This makes the cultural exchange, that I expect to have, so much richer.
